In today’s world, exposure to heat and flame hazards is not uncommon to many who serve in the military, or for those who have demanding jobs where they might be exposed to flash-fire or arc-flash conditions. Highly functional garments are essential for soldiers and industrial workers to effectively do their jobs and provide peace of mind against the worst case scenario. To address this need, W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore) has developed a set of novel technologies, which are incorporated in GORE® PYRAD® fabrics.
GORE® PYRAD® fabrics deliver enhanced functionality to users, while providing the required level of protection against specific heat and flame threats. Gore’s fabric technologies are versatile and have been engineered to deliver end-use specific functionalities and protection levels. An extensive amount of fundamental research, testing beyond existing standards and user evaluations have been conducted to develop a portfolio of GORE® PYRAD® fabrics. Gore has invested in a state-of-the-art heat and flame protection lab to support the research and development efforts.
By eliminating flame propagation, adding thermal insulation and maintaining thermal stability, GORE® PYRAD® fabrics deliver protection against flash fires, pool fires, electric arcs, hot water and high pressure steam splash, in addition to hot molten liquid splash hazards. Based on the region and end application, GORE® PYRAD® products meet, or exceed, relevant standards such as ASTM F955, ASTM F1891, ASTM F2733, NFPA 2112, EN ISO 11612, EN61482.
One of the biggest concerns for safety professionals is not wearing protective garments properly due to a lack of comfort. Building on our years of expertise in comfort science and environmental protection, Gore has incorporated enhanced functionality in these protective fabrics. GORE® PYRAD® fabrics are light weight and offer excellent freedom of movement. They are breathable, which facilitates sweat evaporation and manages heat stress. The fabrics pick up less water and dry out faster than alternative protective fabrics today. These properties enable GORE® PYRAD® fabrics to deliver the optimum combination of comfort and protection.
GORE® PYRAD® fabrics, when sold under GORE-TEX PYRAD® brand, also protect users from foul weather and offer protection against elements that are synonymous with GORE-TEX fabrics. For applications requiring roadside work, GORE® PYRAD® fabrics deliver Hi-visibility and meet ANSI 107, EN 471 requirements. The superior mechanical durability to resist abrasion, rips and tears, along with colorfastness, makes GORE® PYRAD® fabrics more durable and last longer. Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Flame-Resistant Clothing for Protection Against Fire Simulations Using an Instrumented Manikin
This test method is used to provide predicted human skin burn injury for single-layer garments or protective clothing ensembles mounted on a stationary upright instrumented manikin which are then exposed in a laboratory to a simulated fire environment having controlled heat flux, flame distribution, and duration.
The visual and physical changes to the single-layer garment or protective clothing ensemble are recorded to aid in understanding the overall performance of the garment or protective clothing ensemble and how the predicted human skin burn injury results can be interpreted.
