Why the GORE® Particulate Hood Gen2?
The level of comfort you get in the GORE® Particulate Hood GEN2 has been improved to deliver a more natural feel without compromising protection. Its highly breathable construction helps reduce heat stress so that you can wear the hood longer at the fireground. It is available in two knit options – Ultra C6 (black) and Nomex® blend (white) – and is being sold though Majestic Fire Apparel, one of the most respected hood manufacturers.
The GORE® Particulate Hood GEN2 exceeds requirements of the NFPA 1971 Standard, 2018 Edition for particulate-blocking and thermal protection. Its innovative design integrates a barrier that blocks more than 99.99 percent of particles between 0.1 and 1.0 microns in size. It delivers this outstanding level of performance — blocking smoke at critical seams more effectively than other particulate hoods currently available. At the same time, its construction is optimized to reduce interference with sounds and signals on the fireground.
The exceptionally durable GORE® Particulate Hood GEN2 retains its level of 99.99 percent particulate-blocking performance even after launderings. With the hood’s unique inspection opening, you can inspect the entire hood, inside and out.
The GEN2 hood has contrasting colors — white or black on the outside and blue on the inside, helping you prevent cross contamination.
Air Permeability is a Two-Way Street
Products with higher air permeability potentially decrease protection against fireground contaminants because they can allow more air and particles to pass through a barrier. Instead, products that combine high breathability and a higher particle-blocking efficiency deliver a better balance of comfort and protection.

GORE® Particulate Hood — Protection
The innovative design of the GORE® Particulate Hood GEN2 integrates a particulate-blocking layer that stops more than 99.99% of particulates between 0.1 and 1.0 microns in size1. GORE® Particulate Hood — Reliability
To ensure that the GORE® Particulate Hood GEN2 maintains its higher level of particulate-blocking protection, samples were tested when new and after the preconditioning requirements as specified in the Standard – two cycles of 10 wash/dry and one convective heat cycle, for a total of 20 wash/dry cycles and two convective heat cycles.
The GORE® Particulate Hood GEN2 exceeded the Standard's minimum requirement of 90% efficiency in the particulate-blocking test across the entire particulate size range of 0.1 to 1.0 microns:

Particulate Blocking Test
For the Particulate Blocking Hood Option in the 2018 edition of NFPA 1971, the Particulate Blocking Test evaluates the particulate-blocking efficiency of the submitted composite.
- This test is performed in accordance with ASTM F2299/F2299M with a modification for testing a composite with an air permeability of less than 1.7 liter per minute (L/min).
- The challenge particulate that is used in the test is latex spheres ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 micron in diameter.
- Composites are required to meet a minimum of 90% efficiency across the specified particulate range.
