In an effort to equip today's warfighter with more capable, lightweight and packable gear, W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. has combined numerous technologies to enable high performance fabric that is ideally suited for lightweight, single-wall tactical shelters. This fabric combines high-strength textiles (polyester, nylon) with Gore's vast experience in durably waterproof, windproof, and breathable ePT FE based membrane technology. Advanced engineering capabilities allow Gore to further enhance fabric technologies with ingredients that retard flames and organic solvents, while offering improved signature concealment characteristics.

Tactical Shelters

Tactical Shelters made with GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric are engineered for highly mobile combat operations. Gore's single-wall fabric technology offers durable waterproof protection, high breathability, flame-retardant properties, and concealment characteristics with significant weight reduction compared to traditional double-wall structures.

Ideal for small (< 20 man) and arctic (10-15 man) shelters, GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric offers optimal protection in harsh environments with a durable construction that withstands more than 30 set-ups and strikes.

Lightweight Construction

Traditionally, soft wall shelters for defense applications have been designed using a double-wall construction. Gore has demonstrated the ability to combine key performance functions into a single barrier wall, eliminating the need for an inner wall. As a result, weight can be reduced by as much as 30% using GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric in small tactical shelters. The lightweight construction combined with low water pick-up and FASTPACK technology helps improve mobility and operational effectiveness.

Durable in Harsh Environments

Engineered to withstand rain, wind, and cold, GORE-TEX shelter fabric maintains outstanding protection over time, even after exposure to harsh contaminants such as DEET, petroleum, oils, and lubricants. Its durable construction resists abrasion, punctures, and mildew, eliminating potential leakage and degradation — all with a 30 percent weight savings.

GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric was developed for harsh operational conditions, including:

  • Temperatures ranging from -40F to 125F
  • Heavy rainfall greater than 2 inches/hour
  • Snow loads greater than 4 pounds per square foot
  • Wind speeds in excess of 55 mph

Improved Signature Concealment

GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric provides outstanding signature protection, often exceeding typical defense requirements for visual opacity (blackout) and near-infrared (nIR) reflection characteristics. As illustrated in Figure 1, field trials have also shown that Gore's fabric delivers superior protection against Image Intensifying (I2) detectors used in night vision goggles. This technology is among the most common and rapidly growing threats to our warfighters in today's combat operations.

In moonless light, GORE-TEX shelter fabric offers superior concealment of a 100-Watt incandescent light source at 100 meters using Night Vision Goggles. For comparison, the "Incumbent" fabric was 70d PU coated nylon with blackout features.

High Breathability & Air Permeability Minimize Condensation


The ability for a shelter to manage the moisture generated by its users is critical. Condensation from breathing and wet gear is managed through material selection and shelter design. GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric is highly moisture vapor permeable, while enabling Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide exchange, resulting in a fabric that will transport a high amount of moisture in a wide range of environmental conditions.
