NFPA 1971, 2007 edition
This standard specifies the minimum design, testing, performance, and certification requirements for both structural and proximity firefighting ensembles and ensemble elements, including coats, pants, coveralls, helmets, hoods, gloves, footwear, and interface components. The 2007 edition also provides optional requirements for protection from CBRN terrorism agents. This optional protection only applies to the entire ensemble including the SCBA. These optional requirements apply to both the structural firefighting and proximity firefighting protective ensembles and are built into the construction of the regular ensemble elements so nothing needs to added or taken away to achieve both basic firefighting protection and CBRN protection. The CBRN requirements do not diminish the protection of the basic structural or proximity firefighting ensembles.
